Cowichan Wildflowers Update

For those of you that have been following this blog for the past year you may have noticed that I put it upon myself to try and photograph a good portion of the wildflowers that grow in the Cowichan Valley and region. To visit my previous blog post go to Wildflowers of the Cowichan Valley. While I started out with a bang, other commitments slowed me down as summer came around. This year I will attempt to photograph more of the summer wildflowers and publish photographs and stories on this blog. Look for a new wildflower every Monday!

Spring in the Cowichan Valley

As spring approaches and the days get longer we generally have rain and very little snow. This year has been pretty much snow free, unlike last year where we seemed to have an endless supply of the white stuff. We have had lots of rain in the past few months however with bad flooding in November and lots of rain and wind this past week. It does make for nice photographs!

2009 turned out to be a busy year for us at Cowichan Valley Photos. I was very fortunate to photograph many different events and festivals, much of the natural beauty of the area and it seems almost anything else that happened locally. The highlight of 2009 was the release of the new book The Cowichan – Duncan, Chemainus, Ladysmith and Region in late October and the book signings and interviews that go along with these projects. A hard year to top but a good challenge is needed!

The Cowichan River in Fall, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

The Cowichan River is one of the more interesting rivers in southern British Columbia, both from a historical standpoint as well as a recreational view. With its source in the mountains above Cowichan Lake, the river wanders through steep canyons and open valleys, finally arriving in Cowichan Bay after a 47km run.

First Snow in the Cowichan

We received our first snow in the Cowichan Valley last night and while it isn’t as deep as last years’ once in a hundred years snowfall it still makes for pretty scenery. I’ll likely head out a little later with my camera and walk around the neighbourhood as I don’t like driving in the white stuff! The forecast is for warm weather and rain, better hurry up!

Flying from Duncan to the West Coast

I had the opportunity to fly with a great fellow to the west coast Vancouver Island town of Bamfield yesterday. It was purely a flight for enjoyment but I also used the journey as an “aerial photography test” to see whether photographing from small airplanes with windows actually works. I would like to thank all of those that had the opportunity to come to the book launch of The Cowichan: Duncan, Chemainus, Ladysmith and Region. Georgina and I had a wonderful time, Volume 1 did an excellent job of book selling and handling the crowds and Fatima at Bistro 161 and her staff put on an amazing spread of wonderful local food. Nothing better than Chanterelle Mushroom shooters and pizza made with Hilary’s cheese! The local wines were quite flavourful as well.

It’s chronicled in the photos and stories gracing The Cowichan, a coffee-table book by writer Georgina Montgomery and lensman Kevin Oke.

The two locals launch their 143-page work Thursday at Duncan’s Bistro 161 where valley wines will be showcased.

Vineyards are only one aspect of the Warm Land’s past and present explored in Montgomery’s research and illustrated by 150 photos by Oke
