Black Coffee at Whippletree Junction, Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island
Whippletree Junction was started about 30 years ago by a fellow named Randy Streit with a funky collection of old heritage buildings rescued from demolition. The Wickertree was the first building rescued having come from the old Chinatown in Duncan. An old fish cannery in Sooke was brought back to life as Wagon Wheel Antiques and Cobble Hill’s old post office and bank were resurrected to what is now Black Coffee.
These days the old buildings house antique shops, new furniture stores, a restaurant, a tack shop and others. The Whippletree Junction [...]
Well preserved cow at the Cobble Hill Fall Fair, Cobble Hill, British Columbia
I haven’t really spent that much time around cows having grown up in large cities and having lived in areas where “cattle” aren’t really welcome in the neighborhood. Really about the only thing I knew about cows was that milk came from them and they sure tasted good! Interestingly, when I was quite young for some strange reason I collected cow postcards when we travelled. Maybe that was a sign of what my future might bring!
That all changed about 4 years ago when we bought our property just [...]
Pacific Golden Chanterelle (Cantharellus formosus)
We went up to Cowichan Lake this past week and after having a somewhat dry summer were surprised that mushroom season appears to be here. It’s amazing what a few days of rain will do!
There were perhaps 8 different varieties including a few that are edible and considered delicacies here and abroad. The Pacific Golden Chanterelles Cantharellus formosus have appeared which is great as they make what must be one of the tastiest soups on this planet. We will be heading to one of our favourite mushroom areas next week in search of the golden chanterelles.

This way to the borscht – Keating Farm Estate, Cowichan Valley
Keating Farm Estate was purchased in 2005 by The Land Conservancy, in part to protect many of the heritage building on the site but also to protect some wetlands and the general agricultural potential. Keating Farm Estate is located in the Koksilah area of the Cowichan Valley making the site readily accessible to locals and tourists. The estate features events all year and they have been putting on a great showing at the Cowichan Wine and Culinary Festival this year.
An annual borscht cook-off and lunch was held on Saturday [...]

Dermod & Dudley's Irish Pub & Grill, Lake Cowichan, British Columbia
It was pouring rain last Saturday noon when the Cowichan Valley Photos duo pulled into the parking lot of Dermod & Dudley’s Irish Pub & Grill in Lake Cowichan. A wonderful sight, that pub, for two bedraggled and hungry sight-seers. Our pretty, friendly waitress seated us by the window from where — even on such a dreary day – the view of Cowichan Lake and surrounding hills was spectacular. We both opted for the special, a halibut burger, Kevin choosing regular fries (rather than either soup or a salad) [...]
Honeymoon Bay Blackberry Festival, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia
On September 5, 2009 Cowichan Valley Photos is going to the Honeymoon Bay Outdoor Market on British Columbia’s spectacular Cowichan Lake to take in the annual Blackberry Festival. Vendors at the Honeymoon Bay Blackberry Festival sell blackberry products of all kinds: jelly, jam, vinegar to name a few and pies, pies, pies. We’re going early so we you can buy one of the 200 blackberry pies sold to raise money for the various Honeymoon Bay Community Society events: Bay Days, the Christmas “Pot Lick” Dinner and the Blackberry Festival.
