No Bull! You Gotta Love Cows

I haven’t really spent that much time around cows having grown up in large cities and having lived in areas where “cattle” aren’t really welcome in the neighborhood. Really about the only thing I knew about cows was that milk came from them and they sure tasted good! Interestingly, when I was quite young for some strange reason I collected cow postcards when we travelled. Maybe that was a sign of what my future might bring!

That all changed about 4 years ago when we bought our property just outside Duncan in the Cowichan Valley. We are now surrounded by cows, my neighbour has a few, another neighbour has dozens and every event you head to has a fair share. The Cobble Hill Fall Fair has cows, the Cowichan Exhibition has cows and every scenic photo in this valley seems to have cows… or horses.

I still haven’t got to the point of wanting to own a cow although we did have a few on our property last year to keep the grass under control. Needless to say, I have been photographing many cows in the past few years. A few notes I have made:

  • People love their cows; if you go to a fall fair they treat them like family,
  • cows have character,
  • cow owners are as friendly as cows,
  • considering their size, cows are very friendly,
  • they sure look good in photos! and…
  • they sure taste good!

So here we have it, a blog article about cow photographs. I will never claim to know anything about cows, in fact I can’t even tell you what type of cow produces milk and what type produces steak. But I am growing very fond of these gentle giants and will continue to chase them around pastures. Enjoy a few photos!
