Islands Folk Festival – a close up look!

I just came back from a fabulous weekend at the Islands Folk Festival in the beautiful and extremely hot Cowichan Valley. What a festival; an amazing variety of music from around the world peppered with good food and catching up with many friends. Some 4,200 photos later I am back at my computer sorting images and deciding what to put on my web site. Needless to say, this will be a daunting task and will take some time. I’ll update this site as I put the galleries together. For anyone interested in how I manage to deal with this number of photos take a look at my photography site at Editing and Workflow.

In the meantime, other than vocal parts, most music requires some use of the hands. I pulled out a few talented musicians hands to start out the process.

OMG, 4200 photos. I’m amazed. The shots you choose are great. After trying to photograph a local lunch time concert here, I understand why you took so many. Until I got home and actually looked at the photos, I thought they were okay, but upon a closer look, people faces weren’t right, the lighting was off just enough, or the focus wasn’t quite right.

I’ve learned that when photographing people, especially ones doing something, it takes a lot of shots to get just the right one.

Thanks for sharing the Islands Folk Festival with us.

    Hi All,

Thanks for your comments. I’m planning on doing articles on individual performers in the next few weeks and I’ll be linking to music. Many of them have a good selection on their sites.

Lisa, you are right about the small difference in images, some sharp, others not, some just look better than others etc.

I was thinking about the number of images the other day and while it seems like a huge number when I analyzed it the numbers were smaller. Of the 4,200 images about 600 are general photos of people dancing, crowds, food areas etc. This leaves 3,600 photographs of 40 performers or an average of 90 per performer. Many of the groups had 3 or more members so this puts the numbers around 30 images per group member, not a huge amount when I shoot bursts of 4 or 5 images regularly. It’s still daunting however, I’ll be editing for weeks!
