Duncan, City of Totems - Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island
With more than 80 totems scattered throughout the city, Duncan, British Columbia is deservedly called “The City of Totems”. Between May and September, visitors and locals alike can take the City of Duncan’s free guided walking tour sponsored by the Duncan Business Improvement Area Society. In about an hour, the tour guide gives a brief introduction to First Nations Heritage and some details about the art of carving these magnificent poles. More than three dozen of the totems are featured in the tour, during which visitors will learn the stories behind each one. The Totem Tours are Monday to Friday at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 1:00 and 2:00 and start at the Train Station on Canada Ave.
Not keen on guided tours or can’t make it during the summer season. Never mind. Just follow the yellow footprints visible throughout Duncan. You’ll want, also, to pick up one of the free maps of Duncan at the Train Station Museum or various locations throughout the city. And as a lasting momento of your totem walk, you’ll want to get “The Totem Walk of Duncan” by Joan Chisholm with the descriptions, history and myths about many of “The City of Totems“ famous poles. Such a unique environment will make you want to pick up a cheap airfare or train, whatever the time of year, to come and experience Duncan for yourself. The Totem Poles are a once in a life time experience that you won’t want to miss out on seeing.

Hi Lisa,
We do have a few of them up here! I still have perhaps a dozen to photograph so my job isn’t finished yet!
