Cowichan Recreation

The Cowichan Valley is a recreation playground. Our dry and hot summers make everything from swimming to paragliding possible. We also live in one of the most beautiful areas in the world so whatever you are into you won’t be dissapointed.

Want to try something new like diving or trout fishing? The valley has numerous guides that will be pleased to take you out.

Here’s my top ten list. I try to be involved in most of these activities but not enough time! Do you know of other entertaining recreational activities? Please comment below.

Top Ten Recreational Activities in the Cowichan Valley

Tubing on the Cowichan River, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia

Tubing on the Cowichan River, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia

Tubing the Cowichan River – What could be better than floating
down a peaceful river in an inner tube? Apparently not much during the
summer. A common site is pick up trucks heading upstream with numerous
tubes tied to the back and hanging out in all directions. Why folks don’t
inflate them when they get to the destination I’ll never know. Get your
friends together, maybe an extra tube to carry food and beer and enjoy the
day.

Cycling on the Trans Canada Trail, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia

Cycling on the Trans Canada Trail, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia

Cycling the Trans Canada Trail – The Trans Canada Trail stretches
across much of Canada as the name implies. In the southern Cowichan Valley
one can pick up the trail at numerous points and follow it either upstream
or downstream along the Cowichan River. Old railway trestles add something
special to the trip. Good fun for the whole family.

Paragliding off Mt Prevost, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia

Paragliding off Mt Prevost, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia

Paragliding off Mt. Prevost – Looking for something a little more
exciting? When the updrafts are good perfectly sane people step off the
summit of Mt Prevost and float lazily over the Cowichan Valley for
extended periods of time. This is as close to real flight as your ever
likely to achieve. If you don’t have the time or inclination to learn for
yourself a few folks offer tandem jumps.

British Columbia Diving

British Columbia Diving

Diving a Boeing 737 – Say what? A few years ago the Artificial
Reef Society sank an old Boeing 737 off the town of Chemainus. Local
diving centres can take you down if you’re certified.

Boating in the Gulf Islands, British Columbia

Boating in the Gulf Islands, British Columbia

Boating in the Gulf Islands - When you head out by boat from most of
the Cowichan Region bays you immediately end up in the Gulf Islands,
perhaps one of the most beautiful boating areas on the west coast. Don’t
believe me? Take a look at my Gulf Islands web site for a taste.

Golfing – The Cowichan Valley boasts 7 golf courses in a variety
of settings. While I’m not a golfer I have heard good things about most of
them. No recommendations from me however. Here’s a list

for years for the peaceful and serene atmosphere and the good catch. Local

Kayaking in Cowichan Bay, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia

Kayaking in Cowichan Bay, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia

Kayaking at Cowichan Bay – There are numerous places to sea kayak
in the Cowichan Region but my favourite is Cowichan Bay. Cowichan Bay is a
funky town with old houses built to the waters edge and interesting shops
and restaurants. The docks have a variety of boats and float homes to view
up close and fresh fish is often available at the Public Dock. Stop in at
the Rock Cod Cafe before or after your trip for a fantastic meal.
Maybe stay for a few days, there’s too much to do!

Ultralight View, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia

Ultralight View, Cowichan Valley, British Columbia

Ultralights – You either like them or you don’t. Ultralights are an interesting way to view the Cowichan Valley area and Gary at Action Ultralights would be happy to take you up. The views are spectacular as you move along at a
relatively peaceful 100km an hour or so. One hour is all you need but 2 or
3 hours can give you a grand tour up to Nanaimo or Cowichan Lake.
