Duncan Totem Poles – Vancouver Island

Duncan City of Totems, Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

The City of Totems, Duncan in the Cowichan Valley has been purchasing totem poles for approximately 30 years and displaying them throughout the downtown area and the surroundings. Most of the native carvers are western Canadian but others are from Quebec and as far away as New Zealand.

I have been documenting many of these beautiful native carvings for the past few years and finally have put up a comprehensive totem poles gallery. There are approximately 445 photos sorted by the carvers name and date of the totems creation. I’m working [...]

Wildflowers of the Cowichan Valley

I have spent the past few days photographing wildflowers on the Cowichan River and will likely head down to Cowichan Bay today. This seems to be a particularly good year for flowers, likely a result of the wet early spring and then the beautiful weather we have had the past three weeks.

I’m not sure how many wildflower species are present in the valley but I have it in my head that I’m going to photograph most of them this year and put together an online wildflower field guide on this site. I also want them to be “good artistic” photos, [...]

25th Annual Islands Folk Festival

The Islands Folk Festival is taking place at Providence Farm near Duncan in the Cowichan Valley on July 24th – 26th, 2009.  Organized by the Cowichan Folk Guild, this 25th anniversary festival should be the best one yet. I have gone to the past three and it really doesn’t get much better.

Brentwood College Rowing Regatta Photographs

I have put a small gallery of the Brentwood Regatta photos onto this site at Brentwood International Regatta 2009. I’ll be updating this frequently during the next few weeks along with many other galleries. The regatta was a great event, the weather was perfect (except for a bit of wind) and the organization was first rate. It’s always a pleasure seeing so many people having a good time out in the clean air. I encourage anyone living near here to attend next year.

Rowing Shell, Brentwood College Regatta, Mill Bay, British Columbia

Brentwood College School in Mill Bay holds a rowing regatta every year that is the largest event hosted by a single high school. The numbers are amazing with over 1,500 rowers taking part in 172 races over 3 days. These rowers are from as far away as Bermuda! Walking through the parking area was just incredible with hundreds of rowing shells everywhere one looked.

It was great to see the large crowds out watching on a beautiful spring day and the race organizers did an amazing job of keeping everything running. I’ll [...]

Maple Bay Wooden Boat Festival

SS Master at the Maple Bay Marina Wooden Boat Festival, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

The 14th Annual Maple Bay Wooden Boat Festival will be held at Maple Bay Marina on May 15th through 17th, 2009. This is one of the earlier boat festivals that we get to enjoy on Vancouver Island during the year. Typically over 75 boats of all sizes participate.

Past years have seen some old classics arrive such as the SS Master built in 1922, the only remaining wooden hulled steam tug in North America and Glendevon, a 1944 ex Canadian Navy tug that has been lovingly restored.  Numerous [...]

Duncan Aerial Photos

Aerial Photographs of Duncan, British Columbia

Duncan is considered the hub of the Cowichan Valley Region and while it’s not the largest town in the area by population it’s where most of the “big city” action is. Numerous restaurants and coffee shops are mixed in with upscale shopping and live theatre. It’s easy to spend a day or two wandering around the old area of town viewing the cities 50 totem poles and visiting many of the historic buildings that line the streets.

Maple Bay Aerial Photos

Aerial Photographs of Maple Bay, British Columbia

Maple Bay is a picturesque town from the air. The quaint seaside town is quite small and while not as funky as Cowichan Bay still has its charm. The walk along the beach is very pleasant and for boat lovers there is always something to see. The natural harbour is well protected and a favourite for boaters of all types. Check out the marinas at the end of the harbour where powerboats and sailboats share dock space with some interesting float homes. You may have a chance to fly into the Maple Bay Marina [...]

Cowichan Bay Aerial Photos

The Cowichan Valley Region is beautiful from the air and while many people will never have the chance to view the valley from this perspective I can offer some images for your viewing pleasure. If you do have the chance to fly over the area grab a window seat and enjoy the fantastic views.

Cowichan Bay is a quaint small town with tons of character. Small specialist shops are mixed in with excellent restaurants and lots of marinas as the photos show. Cowichan Bay itself is also a working bay with the Western Forest Products Terminal prominently situated at the mouth [...]
